I have personally battled anxiety for many years and have come to learn, through decades of professional study and personal experience, that the answer does not lie in trying to ‘get rid’ of anxiety. And I would be wary of anyone promising to do that for you. We don’t want to get rid of our natural human instinct of fear. Instead, we need to understand that our anxiety is there for a good reason and is only trying to protect us. It’s just that sometimes, it has become a little too strong and overprotective in some of us, like an overbearing parent or overprotective big brother.
We need to teach our nervous system that not everything is a real threat. Sometimes, we are simply imagining threats that mostly are never going to materialise and we need tools and resources that help us to calm the system once we see that we are safe in this moment.
We also need to work on building a NEW pattern or habit that is the opposite of our current reality. By working on things like inner strength, self-belief, courage, bravery and confidence, we begin to slowly build a NEW reality. This weakens the old patterns without us needing to focus on them. There is an old saying “what we resist persists”. The more we get stuck focusing on things we don’t want, the more they show up! This method works. It is an ancient method taught by yogis for hundreds of years.
